THE SOUNDS OF MUSIC ORCHESTRA, INC. Tulsa, OK is a non-profit corporation created to sustain Big Band music in Tulsa and provide area musicians and audiences with an opportunity to experience this wonderful form of entertainment. It began operations in 1971 without a name and a mission, and without any idea that it would exist into a new century playing for functions as diverse as the Greenwood Jazz Festival, the March of Dimes telethon, and your function right now.
The Orchestra features some of the local area’s outstanding musicians with musical backgrounds covering all levels of training. Some have played professionally and some make their living teaching music. They perform in this orchestra without pay of any kind.
The Orchestra does charge for it services and the money raised goes entirely toward the betterment of music. Scholarships are awarded to young students pursuing musical educations. Funds are provided to needy students to assist with music lessons and instrument costs, and donations are made to area school bands to help defray costs of special trips and musical events.
